[pianotech] National Piano Company

It’s been a decade or so since I did this repair so I need to know if any of you have found a better way.

The short lived player piano company used Kohler & Campbell pianos and put a hybrid player in them using a circuit board, a vacuum source, and the usual paper piano roll transport driven with an electric motor. It came in a few brand names, the two I know of are National Piano Company and Universal Piano Company out of Culver City, CA.

The actuators are falling off. These are located on the end of the movable leaf of the pneumatic for each note. The leaf is made of black plastic (petroleum product) and the actuator is made of white nylon (petroleum product). That’s my unassisted analysis of the materials. Your findings may very. Suffice it to say that the two materials aren’t easily bonded together for longevity. Cheap fix is a priority. The last time I did this I used Locktite’s Plastix glue. It is a two part glue packaged in a small vial with brush attached to the lid, and a squeeze vial much like super glue.

I remember going to a plastic vendor in town to get some bonding advice and they had nothing nice to say about this material on the subject.

What’s the latest on this repair?? Anyone have recent experience??

Lar
