However, there are guys who can tune with only two mutes. Now that's skill.


This is what I do. I could use just one rubber mute the upper register, but I use a treble mute.

A guy once told me that he had taken up tuning his own piano. He said he 
was having a real problem hearing the pitch and I asked him what he was 
using for  a mute. His response was, "Mute? What's a mute?"  Now that's 
a real tuner you ya: "Mute, I don't need no stinkin' mute."
