(Amplifying on Newton's explanation, and Roger's):
When shimming the backrail to fit the dags, shim on the __top__ of the rail -
in other words, the contact surface. Usually the routine is: scrape the
surface heavily to remove lubricants and get to a fresh surface; then glue on
maple veneer; then usually sand or scrape lightly to get a perfect (doesn't
bind, doesn't rattle) fit. Finally, relubricate; I prefer dry moly. There's
no change to the relationship between key-end felt and damper lever, and
usually not much change to anything else in the regulating, except for
stabilizing it all.
