I would like to suggest you contact the airlines, and/or the airports through 
which you will be flying, and get explicit instructions on how to do this.

Thanks for bringing this up, because I will be doing the same in April when I 
go to Rochester, MN for the CW Regional. One idea I had was to send my tools 
via UPS. But this will require having to do without them for a week.
