Sostenuto Question

Hi list,
Can the use of a sostenuto pedal change the touchweight (or perception of
weight) (even on notes not held by sost) on a Steinway grand (L) and on a
45" studio?  If so, How?

Also, can the use of the sost create double striking of hammers (on grand)
where there previously was none?  Thanks,
