<< IOW, the non-insured route is an irresponsible one. It's like the person
who rides the motorcycle without the helmet, saying "Hey, it's my neck that
would get broken." But that paraplegic will be a public charge for the rest
of his/her life: we all pay. >>
Actually, it has been shown that riding without a helmet decreases the
number of broken necks and increases the number of DOA's. With a helmet, there
is a greater risk of non-lethal paralysis, since the head is kept intact but
the neck breaks. Helmets do nothing to prevent neck injury.
All in all, it is cheaper on the public coffers to have a fatality than
to support someone on lifetime quadraplegic care. In states that instituted
helmet laws,(California, for one), the enforcement of the helmet laws created
an instant shortage of donated organs...
I always wore a helmet when I rode, but like the saying goes, "If you
have a $10 brain, wear a $10 helmet, and if you don't have a brain, no need for
a helmet, at all".
