Cut a scrap of buckskin into a 1" square, or a tad larger, then cut the square to
look like a "German battle cross."

Put some glue on it, then use the rod or the butt end of a drill bit to push it
into the cup on the back of the pedal, then trim the top edges flush while the rod
or bit is in place.

Life expectancy 100+ years.
