Hey Michelle, How I dealt with it: When I was on staff at Illinois Wesleyan, I would send out a friendly memo every August to the rest of the faculty and staff where I let my "rules" be known--requesting service, etc. I also included a bit about not interrupting me while I was working explaining that getting in and out of classrooms, studios and recital halls can be tricky. It worked well and I had very good rapport with the faculty. I never had a problem with the students--if any came to me, I would simply tell them when I would be done and turn back to my work. I had to smile when my replacement called me and reported that the head of the piano faculty had said of me, "Barbara demanded respect." Hmmm, does that mean I was a b****? Nah--I just trained them well......except for one fellow who took five years to catch on--and just before I left he said, "You can't move away, I just started doing what you wanted!" :-) Barbara Richmond, RPT ----- Original Message ----- From: "michelle stranges" <stranges@Oswego.EDU> To: "caut list" <caut@ptg.org> Sent: Friday, August 12, 2005 10:22 AM Subject: [CAUT] I am a genius. > > Yes. > > It's true. > > Listen to THIS. > > As we all know this is a very busy time for us, getting ready for the > school year to start and we're tuning fools right now. > > I don't know about *you* folks- but I have this "problem". > > I uh..... have a rather relaxed personality when it comes to talking with > just about anyone and well.. this (must) ALWAYS gives the impression that > I'm game for this opportunity ALL THE TIME. > > (This is something I need to work on without being a jerk- you know??) > > SO- > > Today I came up with complete brilliance. > Feel free to use it. > > I stole a line from one of my most favorite TV shows- "Curb Your > Enthusiasm" and made up a sign to hang on *any* door of *any* room I am > in, that will detour the hopefull ones from HANGING OUT WITH ME and > talking about crap I don't even care about. > > (and no matter how many "Welp"'s I say they DON'T LEAVE.
