Michelle,
In addition to metal contracting as temperature decreases, the relative 
humidity will rise (given the same moisture content) as the air gets 
cooler.  Just how much of a contributing factor this is vis-a-vis the 
contraction of metal strings I'm not sure but it probably has a fairly 
substantial role especially over a period of time and, perhaps, moreso for 
the harpischord than the piano.
