Jeff,

Ready for some <real> weather, hey? ;-)=20

23 years ago, when I wanted to store a piano in my parent's garage, my =
mentor told me that condensation (turning into rust) can be a problem =
with unheated storage. Hmm, maybe my folks paid him to say that. =
Anyway, I don't know if the pianos I've seen that were stored in garages =
were wrecks before taking up residence there or became wrecks because =
that's where they were stored. Anyway, they've all been wrecks. Is =
this helpful?

I'm working on a piano that was stored in a barn and then it got taken =
to a bar (to get it out of the barn). It's a family heirloom, of =
course. When I first started working on it, it had a lovely scent of =
mildew, smoke and stale beer. Yum! =20

Heated garages aren't unheard of! My garage is a drive-under (same =
level as the walk-out basement). It never freezes. I can open a door =
from the house and there's also an air duct I can open to pull in heat =
or AC when I need it. =20

Much luck!

Many of you probably hail from "hardier" climates than I, and since =
I'm about to move to a hardier (euphemism) climate -- South Dakota -- =
I've been wondering about the effects of sub-zero temperatures on =
pianos. Do any of you who reside in cold climes store your pianos in a =
shop/garage over the winter. If so, any negative consequences?

I'm fairly sure that wood finishing would be out of the question =
during those cold months without adequate heating....
