Jon - Where did you get your lamp? I got mine from Schaff (catalog #185), and it always runs dry within a couple of days, because there's no way to seal it without unscrewing the spout and replacing it with the rubber gasketed screw cap. This leaves me with several inches of alcohol soaked wick hanging from the inner spout to deal with. It also is awkward to use, with excess alcohol running out past the wick, sending flame creeping back down the spout toward the base. Other than all that, it works great. - Mark Dierauf - -----Original Message----- From: Jon Page [mailto:jonpage at comcast.net] Sent: Friday, March 31, 2006 7:18 PM To: caut at ptg.org Subject: [CAUT] hammer burning experiment >snip My alcohol lamp base never runs dry. For spot burning-in I cut a small wedge of hammer trimmings and dunk it into the lamp base with tweezers, ignite it with a lighter and wave it under the shank or rub it against an upright shank (carefully!). I've heated with the Bic occasionally but don't want to do it too often for the reason mentioned first off. I've blackened shanks with both alcohol and butane, the trick is to keep the flame moving and at the proper distance. -- Regards, Jon Page -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
