Sounds to me like a classic killer octave description, 
courtesy of a compression crowned and (inadequately) supported 
soundboard. The problem is most likely lack of stiffness, and 
mass loading won't fix it, nor will new hammers of any make. 
Riblets might, and are certainly worth a try, even though it 
means drilling holes. A RC&S soundboard, with elimination of 
the tuned front duplex certainly would, but that's in a 
somewhat different price range.
