Hi David

This, if it indeed is the problem Ron infers, would be easily avoided by 
first loosening the pin first and removing said friction moment from the 
picture entirely.
There are some grounds for support of the idea that a slight tap of the 
pin further into the bridge could affect the general condition of 
massyness the termination presents to the string, so I wouldnt write 
this one off. I am less sure about the idea that the very slight 
notching the string can make in the pin is such a negative thing tho...  
On the surface of it, it would seem to me that this could just as likely 
be a benifit as a negative.

A slight notch could be made to function to further strengthen clamping 
effect of the pin on the bridge.  I have a design for a vertical bridge 
pin in a brass insert that utilizes this idea.

    I guess it hasn't seeped all the way yet...;-]

    So there is enough friction between the bridge pin and the string to
    drag it into the bridge cap with a tiny tap?   More to think about...
