An addition to previous comments on Meantone.
Meantone usually starts with a pure third arrived at by four
scrunched fifths approximately two beats ezch. The meaning of
meantone most used is that re is half way between do and mi making
the two whole steps equal. It is also described as the even division
of the didemic comma to two equal parts.
The rest of the scale is produced by eight perfect plagel (fifths
downward) fifths back to the third of the scale. It may be
surprising what this does for the thirds of the primary chords of the
primary key. The rest of the thirds are found to be something
between exciting and unusable.

Modified meantone scales, i.e., 5/8, 6/8, 7/8 (Velloti) are produced
by enlarging the four initial fifths to cause a larger third but
still short of an ET third and the rest of the fifths to be adjusted
to produce the rest of the scale with attention to how they affect
the remaining thirds and fifths.

Well temperament may be considered to be anything between a freer
meantone and a rather loosely produced equal temperament, or an equal
temperament carefully calculated to favor the musicallity of specific
works which may mean retuning for each piece.
