Best of luck to you Mick, There are several good websites that explain the procedure and talk about prognosis. I assume you have not had trauma but are having this done due to degenerative disc and possibly nerve entrapment as well as some instability. Talk with your orthopedic or neuro surgeon about post surgical therapy as well as a bone growth stimulator. You are looking at minimum eight weeks most likely. You might be able to tune/work slowly and comfortably earlier, but don't push yourself. Generally, your fusion will be stable due to the plates/screws so you don't have to worry too much about that but you don't what to have increases of pain and muscle spasms due to increase work load and tension in the muscles. Keep in mind that the medication they will most likely give you after the surgery will make you feel like you can tune sooner than later, but don't let that fool you. And yes, it is not an uncommon procedure. Most surgeons consider it a "walk in the park" and many are done in a surgical center rather than in a hospital. Many people are home the same day as the surgery. Again, Good Luck and God's Blessings and speed for your recovery. At some point in the very near future I need to have surgery to fuse some vertebrae in my neck. I was curious if any of you have ever had this procedure (apparently it is quite common) and if so, how long before you were able to return to a fairly normal tuning schedule. Just trying to plan ahead. Thanks in advance for any feedback. -- Mick Johnson, R.P.T.
