Hell yes! I am constantly trying differing amounts of stretch on practice room pianos. I have used a variety of sources for parts when the manufacturers' quality isn't there. I have watched actions wear out for 30 years, and having had experimented over that time, I know what works with my methods and standards and what doesn't.
Schools also are labs in the human sense. I have had access to feedback from many faculty, about many things, and since consensus is never there, I do experiment in attempt to find a point that is acceptable to the majority, etc.
