[CAUT] Money ( Preaching )

Peter,

This topic is probably best for PTG-L, but I agree with the regular testing idea. I wish there was a way this could happen, but unless someone wins the 250 million dollar lottery and donates it to PTG it probably never will. I've argued with the best as to how PTG could make this testing happen, to no avail. Do the numbers (2000 RPTs means testing 400 per year) and it's daunting, to say the least. If we had a "Quick Test" it might work, then others would cry foul at that not being "objective"...

Like you, I know of many "RPTs" who I don't think too highly of as technicians. They took the test 25 years ago and never attend meetings and are only members in name. After following their work I'm scratching my head... I also know many non-PTG folks that are VERY good! As a whole, though, I think we're doing about as best as we can, promoting RPT, etc. It just seems like there should be some way to accelerate the progress though.

Also respectfully, and trying not to take myself too seriously, <G>

With respect...
It is my opinion that the PTG would gain much more credibility if they did not set themselves up as the only arbiter and provider of quality piano technicians.
It amazes me that anyone gets any work done around here....committee this and committee that....seems more like an old boys club with an occasional tip to the distaff side of the fence (more power to them)...
I'm sure many techs that know, shudder at the antics of 'qualified' persons...I have seen too many totally poor efforts in recent years to wonder if the 'tuner' doing the work had actually any clue at all, to subsequently find their name in the directory with a number 1 by the side....
Am I the only one who has noticed this????

If you want to spend some of that lovely money sloshing around the home office, how about compulsory re-testing every five years...THEN there could be at least a modicum of respect heading towards the PRT registration....
Why not add the last year of re testing to the registration...Fred Bloggs RPT (2010)....now we're talking....

Wonder if I have any of that Laphroig left in the cupboard....maybe I'll look for it after I put on my suit of armour....that hair shirt could come in useful.....

We ALL take ourselves waaaaaay to seriously....don't ya think?

The best way to make schools understand their pecuniary responsibilities to those working in this field is to call them out for what they are.....

I've always wondered about a Caut endorsement granted to schools that meet certain criteria. <snip< This is a long term process but I fully support Guild leadership that will take an active role in promoting visibility of it's dues paying members.

I think the Guild would do best to make Guild members' income the priority. If we want more money flowing into the hands of PTG techs everywhere, we have to change the behavior of the people spending the money. Ultimately, the customer has to be convinced it is in his best interest to use Guild members. The fastest way I know to do that is through the education channels, be it private teachers or institutions. There is a small number of keyboard magazines, I would like the Guild to saturate them, next August, with our presence. We could afford to put big advertisements in more than one. We could afford to target music school administrators.
In 2009, we spent over $500,000 on office expenses and the professional services that go with them. In that same year, we spent less than a tenth of that ($ 31,000) on marketing and promotion.
Out of our total expenses in 2009,($ 1,133,921) we spent less than 3% on marketing our Guild. Marketing ought to be one of the MAIN functions of this organization, not one of the least. It is fine to continue a training aspect in the guild, but all the training in the world is useless if there is no market for it.
