[CAUT] Bore distances for Steinway L

I'm trying a few things combined and am getting some results. I decreased
the blow a bit, increased the dip a bit.

How much is too much of either? I can't raise the bass hammers any
farther or I won't be able to get the action in or out. I think getting
the dip to .410 is my best effect. I've done 10mm for years and it has
always worked, hence my frustrations.

I'm also curious on how raising the stack would help.

Keep 'em coming!

Thanks
Paul

The buttons are original and plenty of room both up and down compared to
the rail. I'm pretty sure I matched the new flanges/shanks to the old ones
(too late to check that now, but I almost always do) The key dip is 10mm.
The string heights are as follows

A-0 19.7
A#-2 19.7mm
B-2 19.1
D-5 19.3
D#-5 19
G-6 18.8
G#-6 18.8
C8 18.8

The proper bore distance is the one you determine by measuring the
distance between the flange center pin height and the string height in
each section. Check that first.

Are you unable to get the let off closer because the let off buttons are
bottoming out against the rail? If so then maybe you have the wrong
buttons on there. Did you change the shanks and flanges to a new
dimension? If so, did you change the dip to accommodate that? What is the
current key dip?

Hi all,

It's been years since I bored my own hammers and need a number. What is a
proper bore distance for a Steinway L (1924). I installed some Abel
Naturals last fall and the project went on hold while the piano got a new
board and bridges. I just measured A-0 and it's 2-1/8". I'm trying to
regulated the action and am having a tough time for some reason.

The key level and dip is factory perfect, I've got the proper blow
distance of 1.75". I can't get let off any closer than 1/4"!! The rebuild
was done right and the plate is the same height as before. I've even
tried to raise the blow a bit, and still can't get it to let off
correctly. The frame is perfectly bedded. The wips are old, but in pretty
good shape. I started at A-0 and only tried 5-6 notes before writing
yall.

I'm wondering what's going on. Any thoughts of what to check next?

Paul
