RE Crumb piece, Voices of the Great Whales:

I made a brass chisel for the pianist to use. It was a little harder to
use than a steel chisel (good idea with the masonry chisel) because the
coefficient of friction was less for the brass than the steel and the
effect desired was harder to  achieve. The pianist in the last group
that performed it here (it's a popular piece) used a shot glass in place
of the chisel because it worked better. Suggest that to any one perform-
ing  the piece.
