The number you refer to is called a case number.  It is used in the factories to
keep a piano's component parts together before the instrument receives a serial
number.  They are often recorded in our log books, so cross referencing is
sometimes possible, if the approximate date of completion is known.  However,
these numbers are reused, making the results of such a search a time consuming
and uncertain thing.
