Call Steinway and order a technical manual right away....
it spells is all out....also talk to one of the technical help
people....they are there for you to help you....i know because
i've called them....

With steinway hammers you have to needle where it has been
lacquered...this could be right on the crown....etc....find the
hardest spot first...but get advice from steinway first....{only
use one needle in your voicing tool....make sure the hammers
fit the strings....make sure they are "shaped" properly....
then....start with the most offensive hammer (s) ....the
tone can change rapidly....so be careful}

I am servicing a Steinway D that has hammers that are hard as rocks.
Even the crown of the hammer has been lacquered. Does anyone have
any suggestions for softening these rocks? Someone suggested a few
drops of lacquer thinner on the crown. Has anyone had any success
with this.

Thanks,
