Audrey, Regarding polishing the damper lifter rod, the way I have been doing it for years is with a dense 6" felt buffing wheel on a bench grinder dressed with tripoli or similar cutting and polishing compound. It cuts through any corrosion and leaves the rail smooth and shiny. Wear heavy leather gloves when doing this, as the metal rod heats up a fair amount (do a section and let the rod cool). Not easily done in home, I realize, but this sounds like the kind of work I'd be doing in a shop if I could. Good Luck! 8-) Rob Rob Kiddell C.A.P.T. P.T.G.
