Regarding polishing the damper lifter rod, the way I have been doing
it for years is with a dense 6" felt buffing wheel on  a
bench grinder  dressed with tripoli or similar cutting and
polishing compound. It cuts through any corrosion and leaves the rail
smooth and shiny. Wear heavy leather gloves when doing this, as the
metal rod heats up a fair amount (do a section and let the rod
cool). Not easily done in home, I realize, but this sounds like the
kind of work I'd be doing in a shop if I could.
