I am preparing to restring a Steinway L for our School of Music over the
summer. I am wondering what procedures you might recommend for reaming
holes prior to installing new pins (or if you recommend reaming at all,
come to think of it). I will be replacing 2-0's with 4-0's.

Many thanks,

Tom Seay

Hi Ya' Tom,

I just restrung a spinet (gag) that had 2/0's and did NOT ream. What I did
do was use my gun cleaning brush to apply "Man O' War" Varnish to the holes
and dumped a load of talc in the box of tuning pins (4/0). When I tried
torque before all this, I got a very high reading, but after I got extremely
even pinning (much better than I expected). Surprise, surprise, the piano
was quite tunable and not too bad- for a spinet (gag, gag).
