to Patrick Poulson The bridge pins not being parallel to the agraffes causes the strings to be out of phase, therefore giving a projection to the sound ie. sounding louder or giving it more volume. From an acoustical sense, the ear percieves it as louder, even though it isnt. Its just like a piano that is out of tune -sounds louder -- than after its tuned. The ear hears three strings vibrating at three different pitches, acoustic noise. Out of phase creates the same illusion and seems to enhance the volume. Keeping the tone is the real trick. If they are too out of phase, clothesline might sound better. Thats why some Steinways are absolutely great pianos. They project well, sounding louder 20 feet away,than sitting at it.(in the right room of course). You will no doubt hear other opinions. Theodore Mamel RPT Pittsburg h Chapter
