Michael,

There is no evidence of any kind to support this contention.

The primary reason for using three single tied strings in the first
place was simply that when these pianos were designed, typically in the
late 1800's, the wire tended to break a lot. When one string broke there
would always still be two left. If a looped string breaks there might be
only one of the three remaining. Besides, they look really cool.
