Computers do have a small battery, sometimes installed inside a chip, to
hold information about the computer which is needed to initialize the
boot process. These batteries are high quality, long life units that
shouyld hold their charge for two to four years. Very little charge is
required to keep modern memery gates open. More current is required to
read them.

If you are loosing your date and time it is an indication that you need
a new battery. Take the case off and look around the inside. Most
batteries are attached to the case with two wires running to two pins on
the mother board. Some batteries are small round affairs like those
used in calculators. And some are built into a chip which is more
difficult.

If of the privious type you can look to see what type and order the new
one. You can change the battery, if you are careful, while the computer
is on so you do not loose the bios data. Not a difficult task, just one
requiring some care.
