I didn't do it because of poor sound quality, Tom. Rather, I felt that the
tape itself was bound to weaken under such heavy use. I remember what can
happen to tapes used in car cassette decks, and how they tangle up
eventually. So this was just preventive, so they wouldn't break and tangle
down the road. May be overkill, though.
