     You may want to consider the Renner "Lite" hammers.  They are on a less
dense core, they do weigh less,  and they are as long as you want them, (
boring, cove, tail, taper are not done yet on these).  
   I would make sure the keyframe has not been lowered, and then work out a
few sample hammers on the shank.  Sometimes the cardinal rule of 90 degree
hammer core to shank can be compromised to good effect, but this sounds like
an extreme case.
