My grandparents, while of German descent, were kicked out of Russia in the late 1800's. They arrived in the US in 1903. Since they were now in the "new country" they felt that for their children -- when they came along -- should fully assimilate into the new land. One way of doing this was to force them to speak only English (or the American version of it) in the home. Of six children only my father learned German, and he did that in college. Unfortunately, while I was growing up it was considered "un-American" to learn any foreign language -- especially German. I have discovered since that this is something much better done as a child. Regards, Del
