What I do to make a point is: I pull back the sleeve, trim the center
bundle of small cords a few at a time, till it tapers naturally to a point
(in about 1/2"), than pull the sleeve back over them. Then I wet the
tapered part with white glue, and pull a point, trimming the sleeve a
little if necessary.
I let it set up for about an hour. It has always held up to threading
through any number of damper flanges, without going weak and wobbly.

Hope this helps.

Susan

P.S. If the cord is too thick, I cut a reasonable working length before I
make the point, and grab one or two of the inner threads and pull the whole
length of them out. Then I make the point with the Elmer's, as before.
