Twisting new bass strings

Just got back from a trip and have not yet read all the previous posts on the
subject.  

While learning tuning in the '50's I got acquainted with the S&S dealer in
Providence (so sorry not to be able to make it next month!), whose head
technician reasoned that since Steinway was recommending 1 1/2 turns on bass
strings and that was valid for an S, you should put more on a D.
