List,

A new chapter member sent this question to me. Although I have realigned
bent hangers, I have never replaced a broken one. Can anyone help him?
The Pianotech archives only have a discussion of bent hangers.
Thanks, John Baird

I have been wrestling with a spinet damper problem, that you guys may be
able to help me with.

One of the damper rod hanger hooks broke and the dampers operated in a
"wave". This piano has a "split" damper rod, pressing the sustain pedal
operates the treble and bass dampers, pressing the bass sustain pedal
operates only the bass dampers. The hook at the bass end of the treble
shaft broke.

I finally devised a method of using 1/8" welding rod and some brass shim
stock to make a repair that seems to be working. (If you are interested,
I'll be happy to explain my method). I've look through the supplier
catalogs and I can't find a source for proper rod of the correct size.
Schaff has some 0.135" by 15/64 but this is too short.

An old upright that I scrapped out had a damper rod that had damper rod
hooks of 0.128" diameter.

The local True Value Hardware store carries various welding and brazing
rod. The brass rod is 0.123" diameter and the acetelene rod (copper
coated steel) is 0.125". The diameter of the needed damper rod hook was
0.135".

The PTG reprint books had two articles, one that used taper pins and one
that used a nail. Neither of these appeal to me as an appropriate
repair.

Any ideas? Have you ever had to replace one of these and if so, what
did you use?
