The one I got from Mehaffey has the line current cord split and connected to the leads on top of the open transformer, just sitting there, not protected or insulated in any way. Stick your finger in and "ZAP" @ 120 volts - that was the only real danger, poor workmanship. As to the output of the transformer, you are probably right about it being all right.
