If you use some CA glue you can repair most of the damage to the
buttons. Remove the bushings first, let dry and then reinforce the
buttons with the CA. Use a properly sized thin stick with sandpaper
glued on both sides to size the mortises. If the cracks extend beyond
the edges of the mortises use iron on veneer on top of the buttons to
reinforce them.
I did this on an old S&S D with excellent results, although it had not
been bush whacked.
