Welcome to the trade!! Now ... join the Piano Technicians Guild and find yourself a mentor/teacher or go to one of the few training programs available in this country. (I went to North Bennet Street School myself and had a great time learning a lot.) The SAT can be an incredible teaching tool, particularly in the areas of stability and unisons (the slightest flaws in your technique will show up). However, you should really learn to tune by ear, because that is how you learn to form judgments about how best to tune each individual piano based on its own quirks and other factors that give each their unique personalities. I for one use the SAT a lot (nothing like it for doing pitch corrections), but having tuned by ear for 9 years before buying the SAT, I'm one who feels compelled to check the tuning aurally (and make any corrections necessary) before handing the customer the bill. Certain pianos have certain scaling patterns that call for a certain level of creativity to make them sound musical, and this creativity is not always available in a VTD (visual tuning device). Z!
