smaller or larger?

I would go with the thinner to avoid the possibility of breaking the new
string. If you put a thicker string on, then it could break more easily due
to the extra tension required to match the pitch of the old one. I would
then try to replace the string later with an exact replacement or a
universal to more closely match the original. (Depending on the quality of
the piano, of course. If it was on a "Grand" brand, I doubt if I'd worry too
much about it. <grin>)

Subject: smaller or larger?

..I had to replace a bass string today on a Grand..it was left for me by
the previous tooner..anyway, I carry enough wire with me to re-string
most pianos, but this particular size fell right in between what I had
with me. So in a case like this, where you don't have the exact size
Universal to replace a bass string with, should you go with the thicker
density or the thinner?

I replaced it with the thinner.
