I once saw a Muhlbach grand (St. Petersberg) from 1885 which originally had a "muffling" rail activated by a lever on the bass cheek. Someone must have thrown it away. Can't figure out why?

The music desk was very interesting. Throughout the elaborate carving you could detect the written script "MUHL$BACH". (Couldn't find the Treble clef, so I substituted with the $ sign.) Get the picture?
