A question for those well versed in the realm of string scales

Your assumption is right. Someone must have replaced the original with the
wrong size sometime in the past - or a boo-boo was made in the factory. No
big deal. Always rescale those old pianos anyway. David Sanderson does
wonderful work and makes FABULOUS bass strings. Give him a call!  Good luck.
