Thanks John, I tried reinstalling batteries twice, still the same though.  I 
don't know if I am ready to start soldering on the board yet.  I have little 
expericence other than soldering guitar cords.  May be I should try some 
different batteries.  Jim Love

thinking back, I seem to remember a cold solder joint at the battery

connection, causing that. So resolder the board connection leads.
