Use gray Scothch Brite and you won't have the 'banding' caused by the steel 
wool.

With steel wool you have to physically lift the wool off the surface to 
start a new scratch-pattern.
With Scotch Brite you can 'walk' it across the surface.

The biggest benefit is that there is no steel wool dust to breathe in.
