I would like to point out for a minute that techs helping do-it-your-selfers and
selling them a few tools and supplies to get started is exactly how many piano
technicians began their careers in the first place. While my career started a
little differently then that, there were certainly a number of established techs
who took part. I know there are several techs out there who got started simply
because they called someone to look at their piano, ended up doing it themselves,
became interested, and are now RPTs who go to the convention every year. Don't
turn down the idea of helping customers to hastily... you just might be pushing
away the next PTG president!
