Has nothing to do with ET. In the ends of the string  the string doesn't move a lot. The thicker string the more dead area.
The bridge make the string longer so the moving/speaking length will be the same on all the strings. 
You tune it in with the octave. The same with a fretless bass.

Yes It is easy to tune with distortion the louder the better.
