Jon & list,

Orange peel can have three causes:
1. Poor flow and leveling (inferior coating formulation).
2. Grain raising that isn't completely sanded out in the early stages of
film build.
3. Unfilled pores that "suck down" sealer and topcoat, leaving "mountains
and valleys". I have literally seen this phenomenon on a nitrocellulose
lacquer job that was 6 months old, done to the highest of professional
standards, that was perfect in the showroom and continued to "sink and
shrink" into orange peel. It had to be wet sanded and rubbed out in the
customer's home. This is a very common phenomenon.
