As a footnote to those of you have been following this thread.

We are presently using bridge pins from Renner. The size 7 pins 
measure 0.099" at the shank. The diameter across the 'burr' (where 
the sides meet the pointed end) measured 0.101". While this 0.002" 
(0.05 mm) burr only occurs between the flats of the point, I believe 
it is important that it should be removed.
