Sorry Dave, I'm just a smart aleck kinda guy! But then you went on =
to confirm my smart-aleck comment, so I forgive you. Really, the only =
piano I would really consider using one of the impact hammers on are the =
Baldwin's and Steinway's. I usually have quite a time using that kind of =
hammer because it really takes some getting used to. I've heard it said =
that when you first get one you should use it on the next ten pianos you =
tune, and then you might just get the hang of it. I've also experienced =
the phenomenon that if you nail the right pitch on the up-swing, just =
take it off the pin, no need to reverse direction!
Good luck, and have patience!!

You know, I was just waiting for some smart-alec Baldwin comment. No =
it wasn't a Baldwin, although I must say living in Baldwin country, I =
very much like to tune Baldwins except for a very few tightly pinned =
examples that seem to give the rest a bad name.
Actually, I DID get the pins to move. It is just that it seemed to =
require a lot more impacting than I would have guessed since these =
things are supposed to reduce shoulder and elbow stress. I will stick =
with it for a while to see if things get smoother.
I admit that long ago I did a floor tuning on a Baldwin console that I =
could see the thick shaft of my extension lever bending to where I =
though it was going to snap. Either the lever or the pin should have =
broken but didn't. I would like to see that piano today to see if has =
become more managable over the years.

Are you trying it on a Baldwin? HHHmmm??
I have one of those, and it has never failed to turn pins for =
me.

Subject: Impact Lever
I ordered a Mehaffey impact lever from Pianotek. They sent me one =
of those adjustable weight levers as is shown in the Schaff catalog. A =
rather presumptuous substitution, but I thought I would give it a try on =
my own vertical with typical "new piano" pin tightness.
With the weight all the way to the end I would bang this thing =
over and over without the pin moving. This is not good. Is this =
particular lever too light? Is the Mehaffey heavier? Does anyone who has =
tried both have any insight?
