I have used this technique on a few new pianos where the hammers are =
as hard as rocks, and it does help. One word of caution though, I would =
only use it on the hammers in the bass through the mid-treble where =
there is enough felt on the hammer to grip. Wally Brookes teaching this =
technique in his "Tone Building the Piano" classes, and he cautions =
against using it on smaller hammers because he said that you could =
hypothetically put the felt off the molding if not done carefully.=20
I used to do this quite a bit, but now I'm more disposed to deep =
needling the shoulders on those hammers that have a hard attack and =
little sustain. I kind of think of it as "pre-voicing".
