Richard, you may find this hard to believe, but I don't use a micrometer =
at all. I carry a stainless steel dial caliper which reads in thousands. =
It's quicker, and I use it for more than just wire, as it can be used as =
a depth gauge, and an inside diameter gauge too. Mine cost me $27 US. =
One of the best tools I regularly use.
