>There are two questions I would like to ask. 1. When and how did the piano >industry/Steel industry decide on the current diameters of tuning pins. That's easy - I have no idea. There is, however, a definite region where the tradeoff between flagpoling, "holding power", hammer control, and subjective tunability dictates the pin diameters. Most rebuilder/tuner folks would put that pin diameter somewhere between 1/0 and 2/0. Ask around and use the answers to establish the new standard. With the current pinning system, I'd guess the consensus would be around 2/0, or slightly below. That's just a guess though. >2.Why are "Olde" pianos, such as English "Bird-cage"s and Square Grands, >that have 1/0 or smaller tuning pins, so difficult to tune, that most techs. >refuse them? >Joe Garrett That's easy too - it ain't the pins that's the problem.
