I can add one situation that I haven't read about in this thread: I had to glue about a dozen bass hammers in an Asian grand. They had what Jim Bryant called "the clinch type." The staples themselves had broken (at either end at the 90 degree bend). I don't have any way of assessing the quality of the staples, but the hammer felt was able to break them.
