List, Does anyone know why the list, and it seems, privately, there =
is a lot of (particularly Asian) solicitation of late? What, if anything, =
can one do to interrupt this (in my opinion) junk mail? Best, Bob =

I gotta agree Bob. I posted something to this affect a few days ago. =
Shouldnt there be some way of stopping this kind of intrusion ??... like =
perhaps having to subscribe to the list to be able to write to it... or =
something like that ?=20

Welcome to the wonderful world of SPAM. So far our inconvenience is =
considered less important than the rights of the spammers to free =
internet access and their rights to free speech.=20
Recently my server (Olynet) installed some fairly effective filter =
software -- Postini -- that catches most of it. Typically about 25 to 50 =
a week. If any do slip through it's an easy matter to forward them to =
the company where the senders will be tracked down and Postini's filters =
will be improved as a result.=20
When the software was initially installed the posts of several =
contributors to pianotech -- because of the nature of their return =
addresses -- were also flagged, but those are now cleared and it's rare =
for Postini to block anything that should be coming through.=20
It has also flagged a number of virus loaded posts/attachments.
All in all, a good thing. It's not a total solution, but it sure =
helps.=20
